Is It Easy to Get a Data Center Commissioning Job? What Our Survey Says
The DataX Connect 2026 Data Center Commissioning Survey uncovered that most found it easy to get into the sector: 67% said getting a job was very or fairly easy. But it hasn’t been easy for everyone. 22% found it difficult, and 10% tried and were unsuccessful.
The report also points to a gap between ease of career entry and ease of skills transfer. Commissioning professionals generally see their skills as very transferable into data centers, but there is still a gap between how easily those skills transfer and how easily professionals from other industries are accepted into the sector.
Why your experience from other industries counts
85% of respondents said their skills transferred to the data center sector very or fairly easily. The remaining 15% said some retraining was required, and none said significant retraining was needed.
If you already work with mechanical or electrical systems in another industry, that experience is closer to data center work than you might think. One commissioning agent who made the switch put it this way: “I transitioned into data and commissioning from an HVAC background and have found the industry offers strong growth potential for motivated field professionals willing to continue learning electrical and mechanical systems.”
What helps you get in
Survey respondents and consultants pointed to a few practical routes.
Training and certification can help you build sector knowledge. The commissioning agent quoted above added that these play a major role in career progression. Contract assignments are another route. Cameron McCarthy, a consultant at DataX Connect, shared his view in the report that contract work can give engineers exposure to live data center projects, recognized clients, and different technologies, which can speed up the transition.
Progression matters as much as entry. 22% of respondents said lack of formal qualifications was a barrier to advancing their career, so it’s worth planning for both.
Who we surveyed
The USA Commissioning Survey 2026 ran in Summer 2026 and gathered responses from commissioning professionals in the USA. Respondents covered contract and permanent roles and seniority levels from engineers to directors and VPs.
