Wonder Valley: The Largest AI Compute Data Centre Park On Earth

Kevin O’Leary in cooperation with the Municipal District of Greenview to develop the world’s largest AI Data Centre Industrial Park ‘Wonder Valley’ in the Greenview Industrial Gateway (“GIG”) near Grande Prairie in North West Alberta, Canada.

Canada, 9th December 2024 — The Municipal District of Greenview is proud to announce a groundbreaking partnership with O’Leary Ventures to build an off-grid natural gas and geothermal power infrastructure to support the largest AI data centre industrial park in the world. The GIG has signed a Letter of Intent with O’Leary Ventures for the purchase and development of thousands of acres of land within the Greenview Industrial Gateway and to the south of the GIG. This transformative project is both a monumental achievement for Greenview and a pivotal moment for Alberta, Canada, and North America in terms of global business investment.

Wonder Valley, which will be rolled out in multiple phases, marks the creation of an entirely new industry sector for the region and country. The scope and scale of this development will provide a massive influx of job opportunities during construction and beyond, bringing long-term employment and driving economic growth. With the addition of job opportunities and a highly skilled workforce, the development will also stimulate a significant rise in tax revenue, bolstering local and regional economies.

“This is fantastic news for Alberta. Our efforts to attract investment, grow our technology and innovation sector, and leverage our natural and human resources are being noticed. I’m excited to watch this project unfold in the months and years to come.” said Alberta Premier, Danielle Smith.

“The GIG project is proof that Alberta is a destination of choice for data centres and their corresponding power generation infrastructure. This exciting announcement from O’Leary Ventures demonstrates that the work our government has done over the last nine months to promote Alberta to data centre operators and investors is paying off. Alberta is open for business, and we’re just getting started.” states Minister of Technology and Innovation, Nate Glubish.

“This is more than just an investment in land; it’s an investment in the future of innovation and economic expansion for Canada,” said Tyler Olsen, Reeve of the MD of Greenview. “We’re excited to take this step forward, creating lasting benefits not only for our Municipality but for the surrounding communities, and the country as a whole.”

“My joint venture team led by Paul Palandjian, CEO O’Leary Ventures and Carl Agren, CEO, HPC and AI Data Centres, has sourced what we believe is the most compelling site in all North America to generate and offer 7.5 GW of low-cost power to hyperscalers over the next 5-10 years. Given existing permits, proximity to stranded sources of natural gas, pipeline infrastructure, water and a fiber optic network within just a few kilometers of the Greenview Industrial Gateway, we will be in the ground and up and running sooner than any scale project of its kind.” said Kevin O’Leary, Chairman of O’Leary Ventures.

“We will engineer and build a redundant power solution that meets the modern AI compute reliability standards. The first phase of 1.4 GW will be approximately US$ 2 billion with subsequent annual roll out of redundant power in 1 GW increments. The total investment over the lifetime of the project will be over $70 billion when considering the infrastructure, power, data centres and ancillary structures.”

“The GIG’s ideal cold-weather climate, a highly skilled labor force, Alberta’s pro-business policies and attractive tax regime make the GIG the perfect site for this project. We want to deliver transformative economic impact and the lowest possible carbon emissions afforded to us by the quality of gas in the area, our efficient design and the potential to add Geothermal power as well. Together, these factors create a blueprint for sustainability and success that can be recognized worldwide. This is the Greenview Model,” said Mr. O’Leary.

“One of our core values for the project is to engage with First Nations Indigenous communities to create a mutually beneficial relationship and one that honors the people and the lands for many years to come,” said Paul Palandjian, CEO – O’Leary Ventures.

The unique project is expected to attract attention from global investors and industry leaders, setting a new benchmark for large-scale data infrastructure projects worldwide. Beyond jobs and financial benefits, this venture promises to establish Alberta and Canada as world leaders and as a center of excellence in this emerging industry.

Fixing the Data Centre Talent Shortage Through Partnerships with Schools

Activate Learning Education Trust – Press Release

3rd December 2024 – A group of secondary schools are working in a new, innovative way with forward-thinking digital infrastructure companies to upskilling students in digital and technical skills, after a report calls on the government to act urgently to address a growing digital skills gap that, if left unchecked, could lose the economy billions.

The report from Tech UK has highlighted a number of constraints affecting growth in data centres, including the need for central and local governments to implement policies now to ensure the next generation is equipped to thrive in careers within the sector, sustaining the industry’s momentum.

Bringing data centres into careers awareness in schools is vital – and an expanding group of secondary schools has already taken it a step further with a ground-breaking, UK first programme of digital and employability skills designed and ran by digital infrastructure leaders working collaboratively to bring more people up into the industry.

The Digital Futures Programme, which is cited in the Tech UK report, began four years ago, bringing together Activate Learning Education Trust (ALET) – a multi academy trust comprising six secondary schools with just over 3,000 students in the Thames Valley – and some forward-thinking digital infrastructure companies willing to leave competition at the door. Four of the ALET schools are University Technical Colleges (UTCs) – STEM-focused secondary schools where students study a specialist technical subject like engineering or digital alongside traditional GCSEs or A Levels.

During the programme, these UTC students learn technical and employability skills as part of their curriculum to prepares them for STEM-focused degrees or apprenticeships. The programme enables students to learn about the DI industry, and the significant opportunities, even at entry level, that are available to them.

Employment opportunities coming from the programme, (which now has 13 partners on board, including some of the biggest data centre companies such as Digital Realty, Ark, AWS and Cyrus One and related experts including CBRE, LMG, DataX Connect, and JLL) are growing each year, with ALET supporting partners to develop and promote their apprenticeships.

So far, with the programme having run in only one UTC until this academic year, five students have started working for partners after completing level 3 qualifications – companies who are thrilled with the level of skill and knowledge their new recruits bring with them! Following the success of the programme at UTC Heathrow, the programme rolled out to all four of ALET’s UTCs (Reading, Oxfordshire and Swindon) this September, and the intention is this expansion will continue, benefiting both the students getting a foot onto a lucrative career ladder and employers taking on enthusiastic, skilled apprentices.

The employer partners contribute financially to the Trust, enabling effective administration of the programme and presence at Data Centre World, which both recruits new partners each year and provides a fantastic careers opportunity for those students who win a place to attend.

Partners volunteer their time to set exciting full-day challenges, run masterclasses on technical topics and train students in key employability skills such as communication, teamwork, CVs and interview skills. All students benefit from this programme, with engineering students also getting to work closely with partners within selected BTEC units, where partners set projects that enable students to cover the necessary theory but apply it in the context of real-world issues partners face every day.

ALET offers training and significant levels of support for the partner volunteers to help them work with the students, and the volunteers get huge satisfaction from their time with students, ‘paying it forwards’ and passing on their skills and passion for their industry.

“We have seen the results of the programme with the success achieved by our first intake of UTC Heathrow student apprentices, who have already had a hugely positive impact on our business. The Digital Futures Programme really is a win-win for employers, students, UTCs and the UK digital infrastructure industry as a whole”.
Mike Hook, owner, LMG

Latos Data Centres Aims to Fulfil the Promise of AI for UK Businesses

  • UK’s newest data centre operator plans to open 40 data centres across the UK by 2030
  • Focus on enabling AI in the UK with next-generation hyperscale and network-edge volumetric facilities which deliver computing power closer to end users

Stockton-on-Tees – 27 November 2024 – Latos Data Centres has launched, with a mission of enabling UK businesses to capitalise on the power of advanced computing, including AI.  Founded by telecoms entrepreneur Mike Carlin, the privately-held Latos plans to open 40 purpose-built data centres across the UK by 2030.  These will be a combination of hyperscale facilities, alongside smaller volumetric assets at the network edge.

The company has already secured planning permission for its first hyperscale complex near Cardiff and has further sites in development.

Latos “next generation” data centre strategy combines a focus on low-latency, high-performance computing, with flexible modular designs, energy efficiency, and the tightest security standards.

Latos Data Centres Aims to Fulfil the Promise of AI for UK Businesses

Latos hyperscale data centre in Cardiff, now under construction, will be a Tier III asset designed to meet the needs of the most demanding global technology companies. It will deliver a total of 90MVA across 50,400sq.m of floor space. Power will come from a 100% renewable energy supply from the National Grid, supported with a backup feed from the neighbouring 1000MW Tremorfa Energy Park, one of the world’s largest battery energy storage facilities.

Latos volumetric data centres will deliver computing power at the network edge, supporting sophisticated AI use cases like autonomous vehicles and smart manufacturing. Using a modular design approach with offsite assembly, Latos can build and open new volumetric facilities in less than six months, on as little as 0.3 acres of land. Latos offers a turnkey volumetric capability that can be bespoke to customers’ needs. This can cover land acquisition, construction, fit-out, security monitoring, and remote management.

Edge data centre capacity will be key to driving the growth of AI in the UK. According to STL Consulting, as much as 50% of AI workloads will happen at the network edge by 2028. McKinsey analysis suggests that demand for AI-ready data centre capacity globally will rise at an average rate of 33 percent a year between 2023 and 2030.

Mike Carlin, Founder of Latos Data Centres, said: “The growth of AI means the UK’s data centre map needs to change. Organisations will need more computing power closer to where it is needed, and the ability to specify the exact facilities they need. They also need the peace of mind that comes from working with an experienced partner. Our team has a deep heritage designing and building complex data facilities. We understand better than anyone how best to deliver the infrastructure UK organisations will need.”
