Role Overview
This role is responsible for leading field operations and full-site management for commercial construction projects across multiple U.S. locations. The Traveling Superintendent will oversee workforce coordination, subcontractor performance, scheduling, quality and safety compliance, and material and equipment planning. The position requires the ability to deliver projects to schedule and budget, ensuring high standards of performance while working independently and in partnership with project leadership.
The role manages moderately complex projects from pre-planning through completion, often supervising multiple field teams while traveling to active job sites for extended durations.
Key Responsibilities
Project & Site Leadership
- Drive a proactive, safety-first culture and lead by example to ensure an injury-free environment.
- Manage all subcontractor activities, site workflow and field coordination.
- Oversee field teams, subcontractors and suppliers across safety, quality and performance programmes.
- Develop work plans and sequencing for subcontractors and self-performed work.
- Maintain full control and oversight of the project site, logistics and daily operations.
- Conduct and lead daily briefings, trade coordination meetings and progress reviews.
- Collaborate with project management to maintain, update and execute project schedules.
- Track site progress and assist with cost and budget reviews.
- Coordinate procurement, equipment allocation and materials planning.
- Maintain documentation and reporting including logs, drawings, diaries and schedules.
- Approve and manage time reporting with correct coding and accountability.
- Lead punch list and project closeout activities, including coordination with relevant stakeholders.
- Participate in change management and support negotiations for project adjustments.
- Support preconstruction and project pursuit activities where required.
Additional Responsibilities
- Manage stand-alone projects from mobilisation through final turnover.
- Coordinate multiple field supervisors on larger assignments.
- Build and maintain strong client and partner relationships to support future project opportunities.
- Identify risks and proactively implement mitigation strategies.
- Work cross-functionally with logistics, planning and operational support groups.
- Help recruit and mentor field talent, contributing to professional team development.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership and field management capability.
- Ability to manage complex site operations and deliver projects successfully.
- Proficiency with scheduling systems, project management software and MS Office.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Deep understanding of construction methodologies, sequencing and trade coordination.
- Strong problem solving and real-time decision-making ability.
- Ability to build effective internal and external relationships.
- Knowledge of lean construction principles (preferred).
- Advanced knowledge of layout, rigging and crane operations.
Education & Experience
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- 8+ years commercial construction experience.
- 5+ years supervisory or field management experience.
- Proven success leading projects valued at $50M+.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.
- Experience managing multiple complex projects concurrently.
Working Conditions
- Extensive travel required; assignments may require long-term placement at project locations.
- Ability to work non-traditional hours based on project demands.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and safely navigate active construction environments.
- Exposure to outdoor elements and extreme temperatures.
- Frequent standing, climbing, walking and manoeuvring on job sites.
